Evaluation.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When creating our horror film our aim was to try and make it look as realistic as we possibly could because that is what makes a horror film scary when you believe the action on screen. This proved slightly difficult due to the fact that it is a horror film and too create the feeling of paranormal and make it look as realistic as possible you would need equipment far superior to what we had. But I think considering the scenes were filmed with an everyday cam-corder I think that I turned out very well and the roughness of the filming almost adds to the scary atmosphere in a way just like in the Blair witch project. We were very fortunate to get an ideal location to film in using the attic of a very old building which created the scary atmosphere all on its own and very similar to actual locations that have already been used in several very successful horror films such as Amityville horror and An American haunting. But adding to this was the lighting which came very naturally gloomy up there so it added a scary atmosphere superbly to the film because it created lots of shadows which adds to the sense that something might be waiting for you in the dark. Also the music we created for the film was very simple yet extremely effective because the most important part of a scary film is the sound such as in The ring and The shining both film have a special piece of music or sound that relates to the main villain of the story and when the audience is watching the film and they hear it they instantly know that something is about to happen with the character and that creates all the tension and we took this idea and used it a lot in our film.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think that out film represents the normal teenage age group really well by showing a group of normal teenage girls at the the start of the film listening to modern day music and being excited about moving house. It also represents children in the film aswell by showing the children playing happily in the film blissfully unaware of the evil presence among them. This shows the innocence of children but connecting with the evil in a scary film such as the excorscist taking an everyday normal child who is sweet and innocent and possesing her with an evil being.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that one of the best companies to distribute our film would be Twisted Pictures they are a small company founded in 2002 so they are a new and modern company distributing mostly films of the horror genre and they are most famous for the SAW series. I also think a company called After Dark Films would be an excellent distributor for our film it specialises in distributing horror films alone and is the organizer for the annual independent horror film festival After Dark Horrorfest. It has distributed films such as An American haunting and Captivity which are films very similar to ours so I believe it would be the perfect company to distribute our film.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
I think that our particular film would be aimed at teenagers to young adults and I think this because the people in the film are teenagers so an audience would better relate to a film with people from the same age group as them. Also because it is a Horror film so most young people wouldn’t enjoy it and also I don’t think an older generation would either. I would give this film around a 15 rating because that is one of the most popular film ratings for a horror film to attract a wider audience. Also the kind of audience that this product would attract would be people who really have a love for Horror films and like to read into the story of them and also i think people that believe in ghosts and paranormal activity and believe things like that exist would really enjoy this film as well.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Well as I think we were trying to attract a teenage audience I think the casual scene we used at the start of the film was very normal and teenage like with modern music and the girls being excited about moving and jumping around slightly and I think this is a realistic scene that the audience watching would hopefully relate and empathise with the characters as normal teenage girls excited about moving.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to use a camera a lot better using various different shots and angles to get the right atmosphere needed for the scene. Also I have improved my editing skills a lot as well cutting down clips to the right size and also creating own music and adding it into the film coordinating with the stuff happening on screen. Creating transitions to help the clips run smoothly but not repeating to many of the same things and also trying to make sure that the effects added an atmosphere to the film but still trying to keep it as realistic as possible. I also learned how to set up a blog and record my evidence as I went along making the film and I found this helped me when I was thinking about my ideas and putting them together.

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

We improved a lot from our preliminary task to our main product I think because the storyline of our main product was much more thought out and planned than in our preliminary task. Also you can see that we have used a much wider range of shots and angles with the camera to convey our scenes. Also the difference in planning between the preliminary task and main task was substantially more and you can see this when watching the two films. Doing the preliminary task helped us a lot before filming our main task because it showed us that editing is just as important as the actual filming if not more so and we didn’t leave ourselves with very much editing time on our first task so we made sure that we left ourselves plenty of editing time for our main task and it really helped. It also helped us get familiar with the camera as well playing around with different shots and then seeing exactly how it came together once you put it on screen and all of these things meant that when we came around to doing our main task we had a lot better knowledge and this really helped us a lot.

Main Task - 25th March 2010

In this last lesson we checked through all of out film and watched it through to make sure there weren’t any mistakes. We made our last and final cuts to make sure the film was perfectly in the time limit. We also played around with the colour slightly as well draining some of it from some scenes to give a more eyrie feel to it. Once we was satisfied that the film was the way we wanted it to look we burnt it to a disk and added tiles to the start of the DVD.

Main Task - 22nd March 2010

Today we decided to create and add our own music to the film and this is very important in my opinion to create the atmosphere for a scary film. We created the music by playing it in on a keyboard we wanted to create a leit motif for the girl so that every time you hear it you know that it is connected to her and that something is goin to happen with the girl and this creates and builds lots of tension in the film. The type of music we decided to use to connect to the girl was and almost jewellery box kind of sound like a sweet little jingle which connects to the use of the doll but with a sinister edge to it to create the horror. For the opening of the piece we created a happier modern kind of sound that’s diagetic and more naturalistic to the scene and would connect to the teenagers travelling in their car. Towards the end of the piece we wanted to create that feeling of tension, so instead of adding more music we added a very low background sound that slowly builds up at the end building the tension with it to the climax of the film.

Main Task - 18th March 2010

In today’s lesson we were still editing but beginning to add the last finishing touches to the film such as a title sequence at the start of the film and the main title as well. After adding in the titles at the start, running over the first 2 scenes we decided we didn’t like the way it looked. We decided to change this idea to a voice over instead which added to the atmosphere of the scary film because it was a character looking back and telling the story which I think would connect with the audience more than just text floating across the screen.

Main Task - 15th March 2010

We continued editing in this lesson with all the extra shots we had taken including the car scenes but we found that when we added these extra shots that the film was quite widely over the time limit so we had to work quite had to cut all the scenes down to get the film closer to the time limit we have of 2 minuets.

Main Task - 11th March 2010

In this lesson we started filming our all important car scenes which we hadnt been able to film up untill this point because we had'nt had a car avaliable for us. The car scenes are very important to the film because they set the scene and are the most complicated scenes for us to film so we needed to make sure we had these scenes done so we can begin to edit through them next lesson.

Thursday 4 March 2010

Main Task - 4th March 2010

In this lesson we continued filming in the attic trying to get the important shots with the doll right as they are essential to the story. We also had to completly clear out a room that we needed to use for filming and that took up most of the lesson time but it is important to the film that we use this room.

Monday 1 March 2010

Main Task - March 1st 2010

Today we started filming through the first avaliable scenes we could do, which were the ones that took place in the attic. We took practice shots first to see what they would look like and to try and get it to look the best we could. We also had to work round issues we had such as dropping a porclain doll on a wooden floor without it smashing. We eventually came up with the idea of using a cardboard box on the floor, to cusion the doll and only use the top of the shot so you dont see the box. Then we dropped the doll from a lower hight when we needed to show the doll landing on the floor.

Main Task - 22 February 2010

In todays lesson we added music and sound effects to each of the shots on our storyboard. We also made notes on film openings from the same genre with the same kind of ideas as our film to help get inspiration for our opening. we also made a props list and discussed the various locations we need and talked about any issues that might occur with using these locations and also talked about health and safety. We also tried to estimate the time of each shot we have and how long in total the film might be.

Film Openings.

The Exorcist
It starts by fading into a house where a bedroom light is on and the light goes out suddenly which has a scary effect to it. Then it shows a faded statue of an angel looking down and then there is a disjointed screaching violin sound which makes you feel uneasy. Then the titles fade on in red which is an important colour because it symbolises danger and blood and the title of the film suddenly shoots on very fast shocking you.

Film Openings.

We looked at some film openings similar to the genre of ours to get some inspiration.

Jeepers Creepers

The deep strange music starts before the movie does while the screen is still black to create an ery feeling because you can't see whats going on. The titles start to fade in from the blackness to create slow tension and build up the scary atmosphere.

Wednesday 10 February 2010

Main Task - 10th February 2010

During this lesson we started a brainstorm of all the things we need to think about for our film including sound, props, locations, costumes and actors in the film and how we are goin to go about obtaining them. Then we made a detailed list of each of the shots and camera angles we are using for each scene. We also worked on a short script of dialogue during the film.

Main Task - 4th February 2010

In todays lesson we finished off editing our preliminary task video. We then began to think about ideas and locations to use for our main task. We have already decided opon a scary genre so it was a case of finding scary looking locations to suit. Our media teacher Mr Ohara showed us around the college grounds and around the attic which would be the perfect locations for a our film so we took some pictures of the most important spots to think about starting to film there. We then decided to create blogs to make a documentation of preparing and making our films.

Preliminary Task - Monday 1st February

In Todays lesson we decided to re-film the video as a consequence of what happend last lesson during filming. We still kept the majority of the orginial film but managed to get the ending scences that we didn't manage to get in the last lesson due too the unavailbilty of the classroom.

Preliminary Task - Thursday 28th January

In todays lesson we did the filming for our preliminary task. We followed out storyboard and carried out the various different shots and picked locations around college using classrooms to film in. We faced a problem when filming though as one of our group members had to leave early and also the classrooms we was filimg in became unavaliable so we had to work around that to get the finished product.

Preliminary Task - Monday 25th January 2010

In todays lesson we came up with the idea for our preliminary task which is about someone finding out a secret about them. We then created a storyboard showing the various different shots and angles we are going to use. We also added a short script to use for our shot reverse shot between two characters. we then practiced working with the camera. And went off to carry out various different shots that miss had set us the task to do. We learned the functions of how to use the camera safely.
